DIY Laundry Detergent

DIY Laundry Detergent

About a year ago, I became obsessed with essential oils and “green” products.  I started making homemade air fresheners, carpet deodorizers and even laundry detergent.  Thank goodness the Payaso is a patient man! I tried a handful of different recipes from Pinterest, but I wasn’t satisfied with either the ingredients or the cleaning results.  That all changed when I was given this DIY laundry detergent recipe by a coworker of mine.  I absolutely love how easy, and simple it is to put together a batch of this clean smelling detergent.  Now you may not have heard, but the Gringo loves a good deal.  I looked at a number of different websites to find the best deals on these products and Walmart was the absolute cheapest.  By all means, go to Wally World and get the ingredients there.

DIY Laundry Detergent

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

  • 1.5 cups of pure baking soda
  • 1.5 cups of washing soda
  • 1 cup Borax (totally optional, but I use it)
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 5-10 drops lemon essential oil

Add all of the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until well blended.  Store powder in an airtight container.  With our high efficiency washing machine, I use only 1 tablespoon for each load.

I have used this laundry detergent on all of our clothes, bedding and even the blankets for our fuzzballs.  Each time the clothes come out smelling clean and fresh and I feel relieved knowing the ingredients in the laundry detergent I’m using for my family.  When I wash our whites, I throw in a scoop of Oxi-Clean, which really helps get rid of those stubborn, dingy colors and ring around the collar.

Now, here’s the deal…if you have any Purification essential oil from Young Living, I highly recommend adding five or so drops into powder before you pulse, pulse, pulse.  I smile every time I open the glass container to add the laundry detergent to the washer.  Let’s recap, laundry detergent makes me happy while doing laundry!?   Yes, folks, it’s the little things in life.

Happy washing!
